Caritas Rwanda signed a contract with The Result Consult Co. Ltd to carry out an assessment of inhibiting and contributing factors of male engagement for effective use of family planning services in catholic affiliate health facilities

Despite a history of awareness about the powerful role men play in family decisions, family planning program efforts have historically focused on women as the primary audience for messaging, services, and outreach. In doing so, Rwanda seeks to improve awareness and demand creation for family planning among community members and improve access to family planning services, especially for males, through increased social and behavior change communication (SBCC), and the use of FP champions.

It is in this context that Caritas Rwanda signed a framework agreement with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre for the implementation of a Belgium-funded project through its development agency (ENABEL). The project aims at ensuring that all women, new-born children, adolescents, and men have universal access to quality integrated reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH) and/or family planning & adolescent sexual reproductive health (FP/ASRH) services.

Specifically, Caritas Rwanda agreed with  Rwanda Medical Centre (RBC) to implement FP interventions through three different components: Increased demand for family planning services for the Rwandan population aged 15–49 years through awareness raising and community engagement; improved availability and accessibility of quality family planning services through strengthened referral systems and improved family planning quality services and satisfaction of users through provider-community partnership committees. All these project components were proposed to tackle the FP issues linked with low uptake of family planning among Catholic co-managed health facilities, including the catchment communities.

It is for this background that in June 2023, Caritas Rwanda signed a contract with The Result Consult Co. Ltd. to carry out an assessment of inhibiting and contributing factors of male engagement for effective use of family planning services in Catholic affiliate health facilities. The findings sought to show the current picture of the inhibiting and contributing factors of male engagement for effective use of family planning services in Catholic affiliate health facilities. The study was conducted countrywide and targeted Catholic affiliate health facilities. In every district, a consulting firm must conduct a study in two (2) dioceses.

The management of the service provider promised to provide quality qualitative and quantitative data information, considering that the findings and recommendations aimed to establish a benchmark for future planning and propose strategies for the implementation of male-friendly family planning services.

The signed agreement is in line with the firm’s mission, which is to undertake, assist, and commission research projects and mobilize resources for better change. The firm envisioned creating a data bank of possible, innovative, and profitable business ideas and impact-oriented project ideas delivered from research findings.
