Population and Housing Census in Rwanda

Rwanda like other most countries in the world, conduct a Population and Housing Census once every ten years. Population and Housing Census is the official enumeration of a country's population at a specified time. The enumeration implies the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication and dissemination of demographic, social and economic statistics of the population. As of May 2022, Rwanda has conduct 4 National General Population and Housing Census and the following is the summary of the findings.

1st General Population and Housing Census

The first Population and Housing Census in Rwanda conducted in August 1978, The census was a critical planning tool as it assists policymakers plan for the future in terms of schools, clinics and hospitals, roads, urban infrastructure and more. This Census revealed that the total population were 4,831,527 where citizens in urban area were 222,727 (4.6%) and those in rural area were 4,608,800 (95.4%).

2nd General Population and Housing Census

Rwanda Second Population and Housing Census was conducted in 1991 revealed that total population were 7,157,551, where 391,194 (5.5%) of total population were in urban area and 6,766,357 (94.5%) were living in rural area.

3rd General Population and Housing Census

Rwanda third General Population and Housing Census was conducted in August 2002, under 3 main objectives as follow:

  1. To improve on the knowledge on the socio-demographic characteristics of the inhabitants of this country in order to ensure a more rigorous integration of the "population" variable into social and economic plans and programmers,
  2. To update the statistical database on population, especially after the traumatic incidents of the early 1990s which had far reaching effects on the status and evolution of this population, in other words, on the size, structure and spatial distribution of this population on the one hand, and on its internal dynamics resulting from the interplay of fertility and mortality levels and migratory flows,
  3. To create a geo-demographic database and to update the national  sampling frame which shall enhance the conduct of subsequent population surveys

The third General Population and Housing Census has shown that total resident population was of 8,162,715 Inhabitants (composed of 3,894,732 males and 4,267,983 females) where the country population has increased to 1,005,164 more inhabitants (mean annual growth rate of 1.2%) because the last RPHC conducted has shown the total population of 7,151,551 inhabitants.

4th General Census of Population and Housing in Rwanda

The fourth Population and Housing Census was conducted in August 2012, revealed that the total population of Rwanda were 10,515,973 persons. Where 5,451,105 (51.8%) were females and 5,064,868 (48.2%) were males of total population. At the same time, the 2012 RPHC counted 511,738 elderly persons means 60 years and above corresponding to 4.9% of the total population with 207,239 men and 304,499 women, while the youth, persons whose age is between 14 years and 35 years were 4,166,777 (40%) of the total population), among them females were 2,033,130 and males were 2,133,647.

The fifth Population and Housing Census in Rwanda, is scheduled to take place in August 2022.
