CHOGM 2022 in Rwanda

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is a meeting which happens within two year to associate all commonwealth countries leaders with a purpose of exploring how they can pool their resources and innovations to deal with common challenges and create opportunities for their citizens. Last meeting took place in London in 2018 with a theme ‘’ Towards a Common Future’’ and one of this year is scheduled to be hosted by Rwanda in Kigali where it will be happening with a theme ‘’Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, and Transforming.’’
Objective of CHOGM
Main objective of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is to promote prosperity, democracy, and peace in its member states.
Why will Rwanda host CHOGM?
Usually CHOGM held among commonwealth countries; thus its leaders selected Rwanda as host for its next summit at a meeting in London in 2018 (James Tasamba; 2021). 26th CHOGM were supposed to take place in Kigali Rwanda in 2020 but it has been postponed twice due to COVID-19 pandemic.
What Rwanda will benefit from CHOGM?
Rwanda will be the second African country to host the meeting after Uganda hosted it in 2007. Rwanda will benefit from CHOGM in several ways: CHOGM as a historical meeting will improve awareness Rwanda not only in commonwealth member countries but also all over the world. This opportunity is of important for Rwanda as a country and for Rwandans too; there are hotels organized to host participants who will attend CHOGM. Private companies will benefit by marketing their companies globally. It is a great opportunity for Rwanda to learn from the meetings participants which will be a cornerstone to its sustainable development.
The 26th CHOGM will be made of 4 forums: (1) People’s forum (2) Women’s forum Women’s forum is one opportunities for young women to expose their challenges to the Commonwealth to discuss about them and how they can be solved due to women social and economic development. (3) Youth forum Article of The NewTimes published by Alice Kagina, May 2022; the Director General of Youth Empowerment in the Ministry of Youth and Culture Tetero Solange said; In light of addressing the issue of unemployment will benefit from different topics that will be discussed on where we will commit to deliberately create opportunities for young people. They will also have time for networking and creating contacts for future businesses. Rwanda also organised a start-up festival to celebrate innovations young people across the Commonwealth through a competition and those with creative ideas that respond to challenges the world is facing will be financially supported,” she added (4) Business forum.

Currently, the head quarter of Commonwealth is located in London, the chairman is Prime Minister of United Kingdom John Boris. Starting from June, the Header quarter of CHOGM will be located in Rwanda headed by President Paul Kagame up to 2024.
